Questions

Everything, explained.

Can I bring my children?

Yes, if the host says children are welcome. Add them to your profile once: they come in your request, and under-3s don’t pay.

What time does a brunch start?

The host decides, often between 10 am and noon. The time is shown before you book.

I’m vegetarian, will that be OK?

Set your diet in your profile: Sqwat warns you if the menu doesn’t suit you, before you book.

Can I just take a box?

If the host offers to-go, yes: pick up your brunch and enjoy it at home.

How much does it cost, and how is the price worked out?

The app is free. The host estimates the groceries, and Sqwat splits them across every place, the host’s own included: the host pays their share like everyone else. The price shown includes the Sqwat fee (5 % plus €0.99 per place). It’s set from the start and doesn’t change, even if some places stay empty. Your card is held when you ask for a place, and only charged if the host accepts you.

Max price or fixed price: what’s the difference?

With a max price, you pay at most the price shown: after the meal, the host enters what they really spent, and you get the difference back. With a fixed price, you pay the price shown, whatever the receipt says. And in a private or secret sqwat, the host can also cover everything: their guests pay nothing.

What the tax office says: does the host make money?

At home, it’s cost sharing: as long as the host eats with their guests and what they pay doesn’t exceed the real cost of the groceries, it isn’t income. Anything the host receives above that is taxable income they must declare. That’s why Sqwat works out the price from the groceries. For to-go sqwats, the rule is stricter: one to-go sqwat a week at most (beyond that, it becomes a catering business, with a professional kitchen and licences), and what the host receives is taxable, even if it only pays back the groceries.
